Our Story

Cousino Medical Services was born from the expertise of Cousino Restoration, LLC and The Cousino Group, Inc., one of this area’s oldest, and largest property damage and disaster response contractors. Having been intensely focused on remediating and rebuilding medical facilities after property disasters large and small, Cousino Services teams developed key processes focused on the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) resulting from construction, renovation, and maintenance activities. Additional investments in training and technology lead to CMS becoming the region’s only provider of SteraMist’s Cold-Plasma Decontamination Technology.

Cousino Medical Services is the NW Ohio, SE Michigan and NE Indiana region’s only contractor dedicated solely to hospitals and medical care facilities for Emergency Preparedness, Disaster Response, and Infectious Outbreak control. Only Cousino combines over 40 years of emergency property damage and disaster response with intensive ICRA/PCRA expertise and the latest Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) prevention/response technology.

    Forrest Cousino founds Cousino Construction to be one of the first fire and flood contractors.

    Becoming Cousino Harris

    Cousino Construction acquires Harris & Sons Cleaning Company, becomes first to offer construction and cleaning; opens an office in Lima, OH.

    Southeastern Michigan Presence

    Education, certification and experience:
    • Graduate of the University of Toledo
    • Life safety regulations established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and adopted by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and workplace safety compliance with Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA).
    • Infection Control Risk Management (ICRA) and the standards as they relate to buildings in healthcare for mitigation and reconstruction.
    • Full knowledge of the building and restoration standards for mitigation and restoration from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) , CMS, various state departments of Health, the Det Norske Veritas Healthcare (DNV); and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
    • Experienced in blood borne pathogens and personal protection equipment.
    • Experienced in workplace containment and setting up work environments within working healthcare facilities.
    • Effective oversight and completion of many drying and mitigation jobs within various forms of healthcare facilities while they maintain day to day operations.

    As an experienced construction estimator specializing in the healthcare setting, with insurance negotiation and hospital repairs, Mike believes that the most important thing is to minimize the impact of reconstruction or disaster relief on the patient population and the environment of care.

    Mike is a certified Critical Environment Reconstruction Contractor (CERC), DKI-accredited ICRA Trainer, IICRC Water Restoration Supervisor (WRS), and has completed numerous trainings in ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment), and HIPAA Awareness for Business Associates.

    Having been with Cousino for nearly 30 years, Shelly has enjoyed most serving as a representative Cousino and her work as an interface between customers and project managers provides the best possible solution with integrity and excellence.

    Shelly is a longstanding, active member of Facilities and Healthcare Engineers Association (FHEA) currently serving as president, was a board member for The American Red Cross, former boards member for Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA) former president of the Greater Toledo Apartment (GTAA) Association and former board member of The Home Builders Association (HBA).

    She has received many honors and awards including - The President's Award from the HBA and many years of SAM Awards for Sales & Marketing Excellence and was nominated for the Jefferson Award, 2015 and 2017.
